Trouble with powder charges

Hello,

I've been trying to load some .308 win. I'm using reloader 15 and 175gr SMKs. I'm trying to load 43.1 grs, but I'm getting charges from 42.4 to 45.1 grs. Obviously this is a problem. What can I do to make it more consistently drop powder?

RE: Trouble with powder charges

For best possible assistance, please phone us when you can be in front of the machine.
It sounds like either the powder bar is not going full travel , or the failsafe return rod is not fully retracting the powder bar.
For powder bar travel, put a primed case under the powder measure and slowly pull the handle down. If the powder die height is correct, then the powder bar will be as far to the right as it can go at the same time the handle bottoms out. Adjusting the height of the powder die is how you alter this.
On the failsafe rod, lift the handle up, and push it forward, as if seating a primer. The coil spring above the blue wing nut at the bottom of the failsafe rod should be compressed to a point where a business card barely slips between the coils.
Also, be sure to start with the powder hopper at least 2/3 full, and throw 10-15 charges and dump them back to settle the powder under the baffle.
For best accuracy using an extruded powder, slow your handle downstroke so it takes at least one full second to move the powder bar from one side to the other.

RE: Trouble with powder charges

Had a similar problem. I found if I put a rubber band around the powder hopper and connect it to the lug that sticks up on the powder charge bar it allows the charge bar to return to the safety lug when the handle was started up there by making sure all the powder was dropped. Don't make it tight just enough to pull it back.
