S & B vs 550B

As a newbie 550B owner, I have been sorting my 9mm brass by manufacturer and it seems that the S&B cases seem to stick on the funnel in my powder drop in stage 2 really bad. I am using a wet tumbler model B for cleaning my brass. Some have said to use a cleaning pad on the funnel but that hasn't work for me, nor the dry lube. I deprimed about 300 cases today and then cleaned again with the same results.....struggle at the press although not smooth through the operation....some of the prettyist bullets you ever saw. Any help on this would be appreciated.....Thanks.

RE: S & B vs 550B

the wet cleaning is the culprit. removing all of the carbon from the inside of the case causes the case to stick on the funnel. The carbon acts as a lube to prevent this. We recommend dry cleaning using corncob or walnut. This removes dirt and grit from the outside, so you don't scratch the dies or chamber of your firearm, without removing enough carbon to keep the case from sticking.

RE: S & B vs 550B

Thank You for the response and info but I have had smooth load sessions with Speer...Winchester...FMC..and Blazer Brass on my 550B. Speer this afternoon with no problems right after the S&B cases starting acting up. I know you recommend Dry cleaning but for today this is what I have already spent my money on.
Now my next question to you is what can I add to my Wet cleaning solution to get that lube back into the S&B cases to get them to stop sticking...I know you guys have a huge amount of knowledge and experience there to help me out here and much appreciated. A google search said "trade them off to someone who has a single stage press". That is my 2nd option...We all help each other I have noticed in the reload community....smile and Thanks again.

I found using wax in the media was a great help with 9m and 45's. I know your using wet tumbling, maybe a short run in dry media after tumbling with something like NuFinish added.

RE: S & B vs 550B

Two things come to mind:

1. Wet tumbling gets the cases EXTREMELY clean. Some say TOO clean. So clean it removes every little bit of residue, and a small amount of that residue actually prevents cases from sticking. Many find that tossing them back in the dry tumbler for a few minutes puts just enough dust on them to stop the sticking, but they still look "wet tumble" clean.
2. Something I read on Starline's website (although it might not apply to 9mm) when someone asked about cases sticking to the powder funnels:

"There are two situations that create this problem. The first is one we have just recently identified. It seems to be associated with the dillon powder funnel and only a couple of calibers (45 Auto and 40 S&W). The land for expanding case mouth is too long and when you begin to bell mouth the bottom of expander gets into the thicker taper of case and wedges causing it to be very hard to get back out. We have modified several by increasing radius on end and slightly shortening expanding land and this eliminated the problem completely. Call Starline and we will take care of it if you wish. One other cause can be a burr at case mouth created by the final trim operation, which grabs onto expander as it comes back up. This situation does not often appear and can be fixed by deburring case mouth or inside lubing cases."

Ok Dillon , sdonley & airlar73.....1st of all thank you for the info. Took everyone's advice and dry tumbled some RWS and RB that was also really sticking badly for 2.5 hours and to my surprise the brass came out really clean and  a pretty good shine to it using the Walnut Corncob , Nufinish and some mineral spirit added also. A slight stick but VERY VERY workable and enjoyable smooth load. The feel is different at the Sizing station one but I knocked out a very productive session and QD 75% for the range tomorrow.
I will give starline a call next week concerning the modification but as we all know....times are difficult when shipping and item back and looking for a quick return....smile...A friend talked me into Wet tumbling but today I just separated the media after it was cleaned and began loading...no waiting for it to dry or running a fan.
Again thanks for the info because it was a step in the right direction for reloading options.THKs will let you know what Starline says.

Cleaning and polishing the powder funnel to remove build up and any burrs seems to help. There is quite a difference in the feel of stainless cleaned cases.

RE: S & B vs 550B

Just an update on the topic. Ordered a powder funnel from Dillon and then shipped it to Starline for the modification. By the way they did it for free....I bought lunch....smile. When It arrived I notice a very slight radius change and as described in the forum they really put a very noticeable shine on it. Installed it and loaded 400 and it didn't stick on the brass that I had trouble with before, a very slight pop on the release on the handle after belling. I also noticed that at station 3 when I place the bullet on top it belled just at the very very top. Completed my QD's and fired great at the range. Thanks all for your support and ideas because I now use all of them from the dry cleaning to the polish. Plan on ordering a 45acp set up for my 550B....1911 for my Birthday...My Glock 17 needed a buddy....smile and have a great weekend.
