RL1050 "Pop" When Returing Handle Up

I recently purchased and older RL from a friend.  He was the original owner.

I stripped the press, cleaned everything, and re-lubed.  Everything on the press is adjusted and working perfectly EXCEPT....

I started running some .38SC on the press last night. When I return the handle up, there is a substantial "pop" or "thunk" as the case is pulled out of the sizing die. It only occurs when there is a case in the sizing station.

The tool head is aligned, the die is not defective, I use plently case lube, and all other components move freely.

I THINK the slack in the crank assembly might be causing the problem. ie, when the sizing die lets go of the case, the toolhead spring "pops" the toolhead up quickly, taking the small amount of slack out of the crank, causing the "pop".

I'm 99% sure this is what is causing the problem, I'm just not sure how to remedy it.

The shell plate nut is too tight loosen the nylon cinch screws and back off till the pop stops(about 1/8 turn). the indexing arm is fighting the detent ball and jumping off. congrats on the purchase awesome machine!!!

Thanks for the reply.

However, that is not the issue.

Please read my entire post.  The issue only occurs when their is a case in the sizing station.

I am 1000% certain the issue is caused by slack in the crank assembly, but have not cured it yet.  I will most likely have to make a slightly larger crankshaft key.

I'm having this same problem. I called about it and the Dillon rep said that it's the expanding ball inside the case neck, popping out of the case throat. Funny thing is my 650 doesn't do this.

RE: RL1050 "Pop" When Returing Handle Up

Just got my 1050 yesterday and noticed this clicking sound/feeling when raising the handle. I figured out it was coming from the station 3 back up rod die. The back up rod was not properly setup from the factory. I cut open a 9mm case to visually verify that the back up rod touched the bottom of the case.

Once that was done, the clicking noise and handle jump began. It also is generated from the resizing die, but not as much, and with a quick spray of case lube, is greatly diminished, but not in station 3.

If you set up the swager the way the manual states, the friction from the back up rod case mouth expansion ring causes this pop.

Did the CS rep at Dillon say this was normal or give any instructions of fixing this. Just does not feel right on a machine like this.

Can't say what your specific issues are, mine were, in order,
Sizer die & expander didn't like dry brass, lube, even with carbide dies solved those issues. Dry lube worked fine, just a very light dusting.

Powder funnel liked to stick on pistol rounds, again, dry lube and backing the funnel up a hair stopped that issue.
