Primer Brand

I have been using CCI primers since I started reloading a little over a year ago. I recently had a trigger job done on my Smith and Wesson 686-6 Plus. I should of had the gunsmith test the trigger with my reloads but he shot something with Winchester Primers. I had at least 3 out of 7 misfires. I had a trigger pull of 7.5 DA and 3.0 SA I had to readjust to just under 10 lbs to fire the CCI Primers. I have over 4000 CCI Primer on hand at present.

Does anyone know which primer is the softest?

RE: Primer Brand

Federal is the softest primer, followed by Winchester. CCI is the hardest, Remington is between Winchester and CCI.

I would also make sure that your primers are seated to the proper depth.  I had the same issue before I realized that my primers were just a little proud of the right depth. Once I reseated them I had no problems at all.

RE: Primer Brand

Federal primers are said to be the softest.

Quit using CCI primers around 1975 because they were oversized and extremely hard to seat with my single stage press much less the Lee hand priming tool.

Still have about 1000 CCI primers from that time and recently proved it wasn't my imagination by loading some of them in once fired Federal, Remington, and Winchester 357 cases using the RL550B. (The effort is similar to priming S&B or A-USA cases with Federal, Remington, or Winchester primers.)

Read somewhere that CCI has stated their new primers are easier to use so I bought 5000 small pistol primers to test. Their claim about easier seating is true. However, for the first time I experienced failures to fire double action from my tuned S&W 586. This revolver has been 100% reliable up to this point using Federal, Remington, Winchester, and Fiocchi primers, as well as with all the factory ammo tested.

Since there's over 900 of the new CCI small pistol primers left, I'll be testing them in 9x19mm and 10mm short (40 S&W) loads.
