Occasional missed primer

A problem just started to occur. Out of, say, 100 primers, might miss 4 or 5. Pull the handle again and the primer will feed into the cup. Happens with Remington, Winchester primers, etc. What should I look for ?

Some history. Had the RL550B for years. Loaded tens of thousands of rounds. Not had this problem before.

Thanks

RE: Occasional missed primer

Check for debris inside the primer slide housing that might prevent the slide from going all the way back. Compressed air can help here. Also if you haven't cleaned inside the primer tube in a while you should run a patch with alcohol through it. Hope that helps.

2x on the debris along the ramp, but also there could be an issue with the white plunger sticking. It's in the lubrication video, but on the back side of the primer feed, there's the black flap that is held on by one Allen screw. Make sure to remove all the primers before cleaning, but that Allen screw can be loosened so the flap can be moved out of the way and the white plunger can be removed. Clean it with alcohol and a pipe cleaner. check the plunger for burs or mars. If it is in good condition re-lube the fat end with grease per the video and reinstall. Also check the primer tube that has the plastic tip that is replaced per small or large primer. If that's marred or tightened down too far it can affect primers coming out smoothly.

Reassemble and hopefully it will smooth things out.

Thanks for the info. I wondered about the white plastic plunger. I will check it carefully. No reason it shouldn't last for tens of thousands of rounds !! :-)

OK, went thru the cleaning & lube procedures. I was amazed at the amount of gunk in the primer fill tube. Anyhow, everything is operating smoothly. Reloaded 400 .45 Colt rounds without a miss.

Thanks for the help.

RE: Occasional missed primer

I go through and deprime all the cases and clean cases again to clean out the primer cup. While the cases are cleaning again, I clean up the debris that deprimer kicks out everywhere. By doing this, there's no debris and everything reloads easy. I also do this so that I can remove crimps from 9mm, 45 acp, and .223/5.56 because that can keep you from putting in primers.

The more brass you collect from the range or buy used, the more potential crimps you will need to remove.
