New Brass sticking on powder funnel expander

It seems that when I load brand new brass in pistol calibers most of the cases will not extract easily from the station 2 powder funnel/expander die.  I have 500 rounds to go through and any improvement would make it much easier to get done.

Thanks,

RE: New Brass sticking on powder funnel expander

I use an RCBS chamfer tool (small and inexpensive) to VERY lightly chamfer both the inside and outside of the case mouth.  Did I mention that you want to do this VERY lightly?  All you want to do is remove any slight burr left on the case mouth from the manufacturing process.  It's really almost more of a "polishing" process than a metal-removal one.  This is only necessary with virgin brass.  Fired cases have no burrs on the case mouth because they are removed in the firing process.

Check your resizing die for proper installation (depth, alignment, etc.), and check that the expander die is not being inserted too deep into the brass.

RE: New Brass sticking on powder funnel expander

I have this exact problem.. I just received my 650 about 4 days ago and I wet tumble my brass after I FL resize so that they are clean of lube. On the expanding station I would continuously have the brass jam on the expander mouth and the jolt of releasing from it would spill powder form my cases. I backed it out to the point that it was just barely belling the case (sometimes stripping the copper off of the bullet) and that was the only point in which the expander wouldn't stick. Any more and the stick would begin and spilt powder was seconds away.. I don't know if I should keep lube on the cases or if there is something else I'm missing that could be causing this. Any solution would be great!

RE: New Brass sticking on powder funnel expander

actually I have been reading recently on MANY forums and this is a consistent problem for a lot of people. Individuals keep replying that older expanders are no problem but when they bought a new die set it would stick. Dillon keeps stating to not clean your brass so much that the carbon on the inside is cleaned out but since I like clean brass and don't dry tumble I have been working on a solution to it that works for me. I have an extra toolhead so I just used a redding expander I had for 9mm and set it up to Fl and then expand all my brass. Then when I placed on my second tool head the powder measure didn't have to bell the case and there was no sticking. The only other solution that works is to polish the crap out of the expander but I don't access to this so I will stick to using a second tool head. Hope this helps!
