550B won't pick up primers!!!

Everything is adjusted correctly but, when I size a case the primer slide does NOT move back enough to pick up a primer....... If I push the primer slide to the right each time it will pick up the primer, but, why the extra step?  What is wrong....  I've tried the solutions posted in the forums to no avail.  Help from anyone please!!!!

From the forum it seems like this is a reoccuring problem with the press......  Anyone got it figured out?  Let me know if so.

Most likely either the plastic magazine tip is damaged or the cup and punch on the end of the primer slide is not bottomed out in the primer slide. Have you measured the distance from the underside of the primer slide to the top of the cup, and compared it to the dimension in the manual? Please call us when you can be in front of the machine, so you can be our eyes.

RE: 550B won't pick up primers!!!

I have the same problem with a new press and from what I have seen many people have this problem.  Even the press in the store at dillon has this problem.

Sanding and polishing the slide bar and housing it slides in seems to help, lots on the net about this.  But I have to watch every stroke to make sure a primer is picked up still.  Cleaning the friction plate with alcohol helps for a couple hundred rounds then it starts sticking again.

I also found watching the rod and how will engages the rollers is important.  Mine was pushing the rollers outward on the primer slide bar and adding to the binding issue.  Easy to adjust by turning the mount on the primer magazine tube assembly a little to change this pressure.

Hope this helps, I still have not found a fix.  Not sure if it exists.

Disengage the operating rod from between the two rollers, and pivot it so it points straight up. The rod should be parallel to the steel shield, except the end of the rod should point outward just a little, about the thickness of the rod is all.

RE: 550B won't pick up primers!!!

I have to agree with cspcrx, the primer position seems to be a common problem. I have enjoyed my 550B for about 8 months, reloading about 1000 9mm and half as many 45's. But, I still have to check each stroke for a new primer in the cup. I usuaully do 100 rounds at a run in batches of two 30's and two 20's. The failure to pick up most often happens in the first five strokes of some batch. I keep my machine clean but I have decided that a quick look on station one for a new primer is much easier than powder leaking out the casing that lacked a primer.
I do enjoy the 550B and would definitely recommend the machine to others, just keep an eye for the new primer.

RE: 550B won't pick up primers!!!

When I've experienced this problem it has been one of three things that solved it.
On one occasion, I'd realized that I must have been interrupted during caliber conversion and forgot to convert from the large to the small primer tube. duh!
On another occasion, I'd figured out that the sliding primer pickup was just not sliding in the slot very well; solution: when changing primer slide, without the spring connected, drop the operating handle to its lowest position and lightly tighten the outer primer tube hold-down by sliding the tube assembly left and right until it's centered; check your work by lifting the operating handle so the rotating plate is just above the primer holder; it should be lowered over the plate hole so that it does not hit the primer holder; tighten both primer assembly screws without a lot of torque - it doesn't need much; reattach the primer slide spring
3rd possibility - compare the operation to the opposite (large vs. small) primer slide; if one works and one doesn't, call or email Dillon with this information and they will send you a replacement slide for the one that doesn't work.
There is one other thing that happened to me - I'd inserted the primer tube without paying attention to the guiding tab and crushed it causing the tube end to not function correctly -- a great reason to order the spare parts repair kit so you can keep loading on Saturday night just before that Sunday match.
I too, have experienced powder in the shell holder and have grown to watch for a primer in the cup for each load but rarely catch one that didn't get loaded correctly; this also tends to catch those errant primers that find their way to be positioned upside-down in the tube.
I'm up to loading 8 calibers (rifle and pistol) with my 550 - the second-most fun I have to shooting is reloading with my Dillon 550B

A small tip to help seat the primer magazine inside the primer shield is to seat the magazine correctly, take a small tipped permanent marker around the top of the magazine with the shield cap removed to mark the magazine. When you switch from small to large or vice versa, you can see the magazine seated to the proper depth if the mark lines up with the top of the primer shield. Helps me to keep one more thing in place.
I check the primer feed on both large and small as both have failed to feed or feed correctly, not often but once makes a mess. Look to start on 38 special soon, love my S&W model 15. I carried one as a USAF crew member during my year on an all expenses paid Government trip to Southeast Asia. Thanks...

RE: 550B won't pick up primers!!!

I got my 550B in just a day or so ago and am experiencing the same EXACT problem as you. I stayed on the phone with tech support for at least an hour trying to solve the issue. We adjusted the set screw until I was blue in the face, took the primer bar off, checked the magazine tube, tried it all. He was very nice and we both were really trying but could not get it to work. Just like you, I could fiddle with the primer bar a little and get it to drop a primer in the cup but that's not supposed to be necessary. It's very easy to see the problem. The primer cup just does not go back far enough under the primer magazine to enable it to drop the new primer. Anyway, they're sending me a new primer bar, et al, to see if that will correct the problem. I have faith in them that they'll make it right.

I had the same issue where the slide 13920 was not going back far enough to pick up the primer. I found that the primer seating punch 13967 was bent causing it to bind. I rotated the pin 180 and now it works. Will call Dillon to get a replacement. Hope this helps.

I just set my 550 up. I have the same problem as every one else. I notice it seems like the primer cup does not go under the filler rod. It looks as though it hitting the bottom of the filler rod. I just notice that this morning before leaving for work. When i get home i am going to see if i can figure it out. Other then that I am very very happy with the press.

Same problem, nothing works. Replaced parts, no solution. Then the spring popped off the slide and I cannot seem to get it back on. Working on this problem for hours. Not picking up primers, not placing the primers properly in the case, crushing the primers. About to pull my hair out.
