550 set up question

So I have my dad's RL550 he hasn't used in 20 years. It come set up for 38sp and I'm about to change it over to 223 and introduce my kids to reloading. I've bought a couple upgrades for the press including the powder fail safe upgrade and the primer bearing plate upgrade. My question is if the small rifle primers I will be using for the 223 will be good to go with the 223 shell plate I will be installing for the caliber conversion or if I will need to change out any component with the primer seating cup/system when changing from pistol to small rifle, to large rifle sized primers? Or if the primer system works for all primer sizes? Thanks

RE: 550 set up question

If it's already set up for .38 Spl then it will have the small cup in place and you should be good to go. When you change to a large primer cartridge you only have to change the bar with the cup and the primer tube inside the magazine tube.
Good luck and glad you're teaching your kids.

RE: 550 set up question

There are two diameters of primers, and there are also rifle and pistol primers. 223 and 38 Spl both use small diameter primers. 223 uses Small Rifle primers, 38 Spl uses Small Pistol primers.
The primer parts in the machine only get changed when you go from small to large diameter primers.
