550 CASE FEEDER A PROBLEM??

Iam wanting to get a case feeder for my 550. It says the 550 case feeder CANNOT do rifle. I've seen where some guys are making 223 work with some customizing of the conversion components

So, my question is this::
With the case feeder on the 550, is it difficult to get oyher rifle cases into station 1?? If I con't have the set up for 45ACP, is it a pain to load 45 cases, or any other cases around the case feeder???

My reason for asking is that I load 40S&W,9mm,45ACP,38special,357 magnum in pistol.
In rifle I load for 223,308, 300 savageand 30-30.

So is the case feeder an issue for other calibers, both pistol and rifle??

RE: 550 CASE FEEDER A PROBLEM??

I am doing 223, and 300 blackout on a 550B with a case feeder with great success. There was a small learning curve, and you have to be aware that a case may fall over before it is fed into station 1. With the case feeder in place, if you wish to do other loads that are not set up for case feeding, it is ease enough to swing the large 'cam' out of the way, and tying the 'case ram' back out of the way. But why not just set it up for 45, 9mm and your other handgun rounds. By the way, I have heard that 308 can be done with the casefeeder, but there is very little room between the de-capping pin and the case mouth as the ram is lifted. I have not tried it.

RE: 550 CASE FEEDER A PROBLEM??

I have done .223 and 6.8 spc with my casefeed and it took a little getting use to going slower but it works. If you're doing 308 or 30-30 then you will need to disconnect the tube and manually feed the larger calibers. Overall it is intended solely for pistol, but you can do shorter rifle cases at a much slower rate.

I had no problem with the 9mm, 45 acp, or 357/38 special; however, you have to have the correct case feed adapter kit (Station 1 locator and case feed adapter) per caliber.

Hi, What casefeeder calibre are you using to feed the 223 cases?

For the casefeed use: Station 1 Locator #3 (#14227) and Casefeed Adapter White (#13575). There is a website that describes modifying the feed ramp profile slightly to help the .223 clear the deprime pin.

The casefeed by default can load any pistol load (non-rifle). The issue with the rifle cartridges is that the top of the case won't clear the deprime pin to allow a smooth feed. I was able to feed 9mm, 40, 357/38 special, 45 acp, .223 and 6.8 spc in my 550 with casefeed. 6.8 spc took a little tweaking because they like to fall in upside down. That just requires moving the metal clip over on the casefeed opening.

I wouldn't recommend going much longer than a .223 with the casefeed. Anything larger then you will have to manually feed it because it won't feed reliably.

the 650 works with rifle for two reason: 1) the ramp profile for the casing is reversable allowing for pistol vs rifle profiles. 2) The 650 press is taller than the 550.

Thank you all for your input. Think I'll leave my 550 alone and put that money towards a 650
