45 ACP CRIMP DIE PROBLEMS

Dillon you have a problem with your 45 ACP crimp die. The case should not be binding in die and should not be shaving brass off and making a bevel at crimp point. Going to send the second set back. And yes they are set up correct and cleaned before using as I do with all my new dies and periodically clean during use. The shell plate is good and dies set up per instructions. This is my 3 rd rl550b in 20 years so I have had lots of experience. Look at the post dated towards end march on this same forum there are others having problems. Beware there is a problem with the 45ACP DIES regardless if Dillon wants to admit it or not and this time I am sending a dummy round with them no primer or powder and please don't just replace look at them and find the problem before some one gets hurt.

Agreed. Something is definitely not right with the crimp die. Loaded about 150 rounds and it felt and sounded like binding and was coming from the crimp die. You shouldn't even notice the crimp but it appears as a galled band around the case.

RE: 45 ACP CRIMP DIE PROBLEMS

I spoke with Dillon yesterday and was asked how I cleaned the brass and I replied with a sonic cleaner then I tumbled in corn media with polish for 1 hr. he said this was problem that the sonic cleaner was getting them too clean and I should spray some lube on the cases. I didn't think this was problem but told him I would give it a try and had same problem. I also re crimped a factory round and same thing it gets hung up in die and makes a loud pop coming out of die and like you said it makes a ring at top of brass like it has been shaved to a bevel. Going to call again. Are you using new or cleaned brass if cleaned who's were they cleaned and how old are dies. Something is just not right I know I have every thing set up correctly and like the other post on here the guy said he put them in a friends 550 and same thing, they then put the friends dies back in and using same brass and components they had a problem. So Dillon when I send these back don't just send out new ones check the dies out and find the problem please. I guess if it happens a third time I will go to a different brand.

RE: 45 ACP CRIMP DIE PROBLEMS

Was using brand new starline brass and I even lubed with Dillon case lube. It shouldn't matter. My lee dies do not do this. The Dillon dies are brand new, first use.

Spoke with the old guy mike at dillon and he wad very knowledgeable. Sending complete set of dies sack with a few dummy rounds. I asked this time not to just replace but to check them in a 550 and he assured me he would. After trying again today just to make sure I wasn't missing some thing but same problem. There is definitely a problem with the 45 acp crimp die. If you are new to reloading the case should never stick or drastically shave off the brass. All I can say is call Dillon I will give them one more try after that will buy different dies.

I don't know much, but is it possible the internal crimp slide has been place upside down inside the main body of the die?  Whatever hope it gets fixed for you.

RE: 45 ACP CRIMP DIE PROBLEMS

I am having the exact same issue with my Dillon 45acp dies (New 550B set-up and dies).  Using lube on corncob cleaned once fired Winchester brass.  The loud pop and brass shaving is very concerning.  Please post what you find out so I know what to do.  If Dillon finds an issue hope they can correct it.

RE: 45 ACP CRIMP DIE PROBLEMS

Talked with dillon today and there is a problem with the crimp die. The engineer took a look at it and set it up in a 550 press and they discovered it is not the correct size. that was the short answer I was also told they pulled all the ones they had off the line. I really would like to see dillon recall these dies for safety reasons due to a lot of beginners are getting into reloading and I don't think they will realize there is a problem expesialy if they are only loading for the 45acp. all that is happening with the crimp die is it shaves off the brass at the case mouth it never crimps the bullet and since this caliber head spaces at the mouth and this is bad because if the case is reloaded several times its going to weaken the mouth. I think dillon knew of the problem because they are already producing the right ones with correct tolerance because my new dies will be sent out today. their is no telling how many dies like this that they sold I think dillon should post a recall on the their web site and if they don't I am really thinking about never buying another thing from them again because they are putting money first over someone getting hurt. do not use dies and when you call make sure they understand to send the new corrected die or direct the caller to this post. good luck all.
