primers seating sideways

I finally upgraded from a square D to a 650 in December. I load about 20,000 38 spl. for cowboy shooting. It has been working pretty good with a few hick-ups...

The biggest problem I am having is that the primers every once in awhile is seating sideways(3-4/100) in the case. I took the primer feeder apart and checked that the screws were tight. I don't understand how the primers can get turned on there sides but they do.

My Federal primers are hard to obtain and wasting them during reloading is become a big problem.

Jody, I too have had this problem in the past w/ Federal and CCI primers. I called Tech help and here is what they suggested: 1) Try Winchester primers, they seem to be the perfect size. 2) You may be going to fast (400/hr and the problem all but ceases) Dismantel the primer station and LIGHTLY sand the upper and lower head w/ 600 grit emmery cloth,or 0000 steel wool. I know that personaly I have less trouble w/ Winchester than any other primers I've tried. Also Jody, don't hesitate to call customer service anytime to discuss problems. They are great and will spend as much time w/ you as it takes. Hope this helps, Bruce Goudy XL650 owner.

Check and make sure the primer seating punch assembly is threaded tightly up into the underside of the platform. If this has backed out at all, then as the disc rotates the primer can flip onto its side.

Jody, sorry I just read about your primer problem now, been busy working, loading ammo, shooting. I too had primer trouble when I got the 650 in Dec. 07 using Federal primers also in 38 special brass. Come to find out, shell plate bolt was too tight, and under plate there are 2 bolts that were loose. I tighten the 2 that were loose, and loosen the shell plate bolt just a little. Now all the Federal 100's seat good. Hope this helps ya. Dale+++
