My RL1050 was the victim of a water leak in my basement. A small leak in a water line sprayed on it for awhile and I didn't find it until some rust occurred.
I am going to completely disassemble it and I think powder coating the base and the toolhead is the best option for rehab.
I have found a color that appears to look good:

The earliest RL1050s were electroless nickel plated. After we found some lubricants caused the nickel in the crank to peel, we changed to a parkerized finish. Powder coating would be fine, except for the top of the frame where the shellplate rides. Thicknesses in powder coating are too viriable for that location.
