Lubing The Index ring

I have an XL650 and the maintenance kit with the Dillon supplied grease, et. al. My owner's manual mentions "greasing the index ring" but doesn't tell me how to get to it. Do I have to remove the shell plate to access it? I can lube the cam and ramp on it's underside but how do i get to the top?

Use the syringe to squirt grease up underneath the ring to lube between the ring and shaft. Add a light layer of grease to the angled camming surfaces and you're done there. No need to disassemble anything to lube.
