Inconsistant OCL

Have read several postings concerning overall cartridge legnth. Some very good suggestions! However am still experiencing some difficulty. I don't get in a hurry and pay particular attention to full handle stroke. Bench is sound. All cases are hand trimmed to legnth within specs. Using Hornaday V-max bullets. Most OCL will be within 1/2 a thousandth more or less and consistant but then all of a sudden I will get one three to four thousandths either way. All stations of shellplate are full. Am currently loading 204 Ruger but am experiencing this problem with all calibers even pistol loads. I am pleased with the overall performance of my 550 and wondering if it is something I am overlooking. Lots of you guys have been reloading a whole lot longer than me so I thought you might have some suggestions. Not complaining just wanting to learn how to do better!

If all the stations are loaded, then most of the variation is in the individual bullet. What happens is the ogive is slightly different, so that the bullet seat stem contacts the bullet either higher or lower, whereever that diameter is, giving a different OAL. If you are shooting benchrest it might be important, otherwise you will never notice it.

Thanks for the timely reply. I had no idea that ogive could cause a variation of 3-5 thousandths. However I did experience and appreciate your advice. While reloading 204 with Hornaday V-max 32 grain I hit on a box of 100 that stayed consistant within .001 either way. Just always looking for a way to achieve consistancy without paying big bucks for high end components. Appreciate your help!
