Extrudede Powder Blues

I reload on the XL650. I was reloading 45acp with Unique and 700x. Both are extruded and both are a total pain in my rear.

Unique uses 8gr for a 185gr JHP. This means a lot of spillover. This spillover always jams the primer system, and causes primers to seat sideways, and if not mangling them.

700x uses 5gr for a 185gr JHP. The problem is the powder does not like to drop. I drop anywhere from half a grain to a full gr more, or less. Not very accurate.

Does anyone know of a good extruded powder, or ball powder that I can run in the 650 to reload 45acp with losing my mind?

these are not extruded powders, but actually flake powders. Unique is a very bulky powder, with coarse flakes, and is better used in taller cases such as 357, 44 magnum and 45 Colt.

700-x is a small flake powder, and meters very well. We have used lots of this powder in 45 ACP in-house. It sounds like you are not fully cycling the powder bar, either not flaring enough to move the powder bar all the way over, or else not enough tension on the blue wing nut on the failsafe rod to fully retract the powder bar. Be sure that you start with the powder hopper at least 2/3 full, throw 10-15 charges to settle the powder under the baffle.

It is possible tht the interior of the powder funnel or drop tube are contaminated. Might be a good idea to use a cotton swab and alcohol to degrease the interior of these.

Sounds good to me. I'll save the Unique for reloading shotgun, and continue to use the 700x after cleaning out the powder messure and die.

WW231 also meters very well and I believe it's a ball powder.

hugo,

i run a 200g jfp from Montana gold bullet in my 45acp.
i use 5 grains of Winchester super target powder WST
with a Winchester large pistol primer.

i love the load it makes major for ipsc and it feeds very well!!

Good afternoon Gents,

I had the same trouble with Unique dribbeling 3 to 5 flakes out the top of the powder bar every round charged. I solved it by changing out to a new charg bar with square angles and somewhat tighter fit. I can also now use Bullseye for my Cowboy Action reloading needs.
