308 Win Primer not flush

Hi,

Been using my 550 to reload 308W. Been ok for 300 rounds then the expander button unscrewed in the case. Cut the case in half and rescued the expander. However since then I have not been able to get the primers flush with the case. I have snugged up the shell plate holder as much as i can. when no brass is in the shellholder and i test cycle it the primer piston is reaching the top of the cup. but when there is brass in place i can never get the primer flush any more. i looked at the shell holder and it doesnt look bent, so i am not sure what to do any more and have spent the last 4 hours trouble shooting. I have done a lot of reloading on my 550 (rifle and pistol) lots of problems but always fixable but never had this problem before that i cant fix. its not the brass as i am halfway through the same batch of twice fired brass. the first half is fine (until the expander button backed off), but when i continue with the next half of the brass I cant get aywhere.

what can i do next?

Check the crank for a crack near where the handle inserts into it. Next, check the two screws that attach the spent primer catcher to the underside of the platform. If the left screw is loose, it contacts the top of the primer slide, preventing the primer from fully seating.

I've similar problems and I think I just found out what was causing the problem.

The bolt that holds the shellplate and "star" down, is moving as I'm turning the star to advance to the next stage. I have noticed the bolt will screw in easily then get tight and then screw in easier. I'm tempted to put a little plumbers tape on the bolt threads but suspect the engineers at Dillon wouldn't recommend that fix.

What can I do to stop the bolt from changing it's depth/heigth?

I think I know what you are asking, have you tried tightening the brass tip set screw on the left side of the piston under the shellplate platform, this screw has to be tightened to keep the star and shellplate from tightening or loosening. Look in the Dillon set up manual and it is easlily missed. I loaded for months before I ever knew the screw was there. I hope this helps, you may already know about this but that is what the problem sounds like to me, been there, done that

I took this from page 8 and 9 of the manual

Take the brass tipped set screw (#13923) insert andtighten securely in the tapped hole beneath the platform on the left side of the main shaft,This will keep the
shellplate from tightening as you use the machine. This
screw must be loosened when changing calibers, something
that is often forgotten as it’s out of sight.
